Ingredients

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 1/4 teaspoon saffron threads
  • 1 tablespoon orange juice
  • Powdered sugar for garnish
  • Orange zest for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a saucepan, combine water and butter over medium heat until the butter melts. Bring to a boil.
  3. Stir in the flour and salt all at once, and stir vigorously until the mixture forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the pan.
  4. Remove from heat and let cool for 5 minutes. Then, add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition until the dough is smooth and shiny.
  5. Transfer the choux pastry to a piping bag fitted with a large round tip. Pipe small mounds (about 1 inch) onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each.
  6. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until puffs are golden brown and puffed up. Turn off the oven and let them cool inside with the door slightly ajar.
  7. For the filling, whip the heavy cream with powdered sugar until soft peaks form. Gently fold in orange zest, saffron, and orange juice until well combined.
  8. Once the puffs are completely cool, use a small knife to cut a slit in the side of each puff. Fill the puffs with the orange-saffron cream using a piping bag.
  9. Dust the filled cream puffs with powdered sugar and garnish with additional orange zest before serving. Enjoy!

Notes

Tip: For best results, serve these cream puffs the same day they are made to maintain their light and airy texture.

When making the cream puffs, ensure that you let the choux pastry cool completely before filling to prevent the cream from melting. If you find the filling too runny, you can chill it in the fridge for a bit to help it firm up.

For variations, feel free to experiment with different citrus flavors, such as lemon or lime, or try incorporating a splash of vanilla extract for added depth. These cream puffs are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for a day or two.
